4 Biggest Multiplication Mistakes: What Parents need to know.

During my time assisting families with their children in math, I’ve realized multiplication is a topic that most students fall behind on.

We all know that multiplication is a largely foundational topic. Yet for some reason, many students struggle different areas in math because this foundation is not strong.

Want to help your child with multiplication?

Here are some common mistakes and helpful tips for parents who have a child learning multiplication. These are things I make sure to address with my 1:1 students during lessons.

Mistake #1: Starting with mare memorization.

We need to start with the CONCEPT FIRST. This is because the material will be presented in different ways. Attempting to only memorize-- while this is also an important part to do for math, like FLUENCY-- it will not be the best path for your child’s math journey. This means that you want to focus on ways to use multiplication strategies. Aim for long term success, not quick and temporary!

Mistake #2: Attempting to learn them all at once.

Learning all the time tables at once is a daunting task for anyone. It is a mistake to expect a child to learn and memorize them hurriedly. I like to use the “chunking” method, where we focus on a handful at a time. This builds memory muscle and confidence in the child.

Mistake #3: Not starting early.

After your child understands the concept and knows how to use strategies to solve multiplication problems, then it's time to start a multiplication study routine for fluency. Do not wait for their class to be starting multiplication table tests for you to start studying. This places unnecessary stress on the child to learn them all at one time. I would suggest focusing on your study routine with the items on your chunking list for 10-20 mins daily prior to all other tasks at home.

Mistake #4: Not practicing DAILY (including the previously learned ones).

If your child is learning time tables, 1 to 12’s in order, make sure to always review the previous ones. There are so many to learn and if they are not being reviewed they will be forgotten. In your study routine make sure to inbead reviewing past learned multiplication tables.
