🧠 What Makes Math Difficult for Kids?

We can prevent— or minimize— math difficulties if we understand what to look out for.

Prevention is key!

Here are 3 reasons why Math is difficult for kids. What would you add to the list?

  1. Temporary Tactics:

"Lite Learning" takes form when when temporary tactics are used. These include: "tricks," shortcuts, and relying on memorization leading to false sense of knowledge.

  2. Need for Re-Learning:

Topics and skills in Math keep showing up even when you think you're done with them. Some return more frequently than others.

At more advanced levels of math, not only does their basic concept show up but also new skills are added.

The child NOW has 3 challenges at one time:

    • Relearning old material,

    • learning new more complex strategies, and

    • be able to use that information for their current level of math

3. Insufficient Exposure

Your child is capable of making all types of connections when exposed to different techniques and strategies.

There are more than one ways to solve a problem. The more your child is exposed to a variety of sample problems and variety of strategies, the more they’ll make use of the tools in their toolbox to make more meaningful connections on each topic. That in itself promotes deep learning and understanding of the subject.
